The Xbox (now more commonly known as the Original Xbox) was Microsoft's first video game console. It was released on November 15th, 2001 in North America; February 22nd, 2002 in Japan; and in March 14th, 2002 in Europe and Australia. It was Microsoft's first foray in the gaming console market, competing against the Sony PlayStation 2 and the Nintendo GameCube. It was also the first console produced by an American company since the Atari Jaguar, which was discontinued in 1996.
